Rank tracker pricing looks like a simple menu: this many keywords for this many dollars a month. The problem is that every tool counts keywords differently, updates on a different schedule, and bundles different extras. Two plans at $129 a month can differ by three times in what you actually get.
This guide lays out the prices as listed on September 6, 2026, converts them to one number you can compare, and shows when an API beats a tool.
Rank tracker prices side by side
| Tool | Entry plan | Keywords tracked | Cost per keyword per month | Update frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nightwatch | €79 (about $92) | 500 | about 18 cents | Daily |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 | 750 | 17 cents | Weekly on Lite, paid add-on for daily |
| Semrush | $117.33 as listed | 500 | 23 cents | Daily |
| SE Ranking Core | $129 | 2,000 | 6 cents | Daily |
| AccuRanker Professional | $224 | 2,000 | 11 cents | Daily |
And the larger plans:
| Tool | Plan | Keywords tracked | Cost per keyword per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nightwatch Professional | €159 (about $185) | 2,500 | 7 cents |
| Nightwatch Agency | €399 (about $465) | 7,500 | 6 cents |
| Ahrefs Standard | $249 | 2,000 | 12 cents |
| Ahrefs Advanced | $449 | 5,000 | 9 cents |
| SE Ranking Growth | $279 | 5,000 | 6 cents |
| AccuRanker Expert | $764 | 10,000 | 8 cents |
| Semrush Advanced | $455.67 as listed | 5,000 | 9 cents |
Prices are monthly billing unless the tool only lists one number. Ahrefs, Semrush, and SE Ranking are full SEO suites, so the rank tracker is one part of what you pay for. Nightwatch and AccuRanker are rank trackers first. Euro prices are converted at roughly $1.16.
The one number to compare: cost per keyword per month
Divide the monthly price by the keyword count. That gives a range from about 6 cents (SE Ranking, Nightwatch Agency) to about 23 cents (Semrush entry plan) per keyword per month in September 2026.
Then ask what a “keyword” is. On every tool above, the same keyword tracked in two cities or on two devices counts as two. A local agency tracking 300 keywords for 10 clients across 3 cities each is tracking 9,000 keywords. That moves you from an entry plan to the top of the table.
What pushes the price up
More keywords. The obvious one. Most tools step up in tiers, so 2,100 keywords costs the same as 5,000.
More locations. Each city is a multiplier. National brands rarely notice. Local businesses and agencies always do.
Daily updates. Ahrefs Lite updates weekly and charges extra for daily. Others include daily. Ask whether you need it. Weekly is enough for most keywords, as we explain in how to check your Google rankings.
Mobile and desktop. Two devices is two keywords on most tools. Since mobile and desktop pages differ, many teams track both. See why mobile and desktop rankings differ.
Users, projects, and reports. Suites limit projects and seats per plan. Agencies hit these before they hit keyword limits.
Bundled tools. Ahrefs and Semrush include backlink and keyword research databases. If you use them, the rank tracker is almost free. If you do not, you are paying for them.
The API alternative: pay per check
A SERP API charges per fetched page instead of per tracked keyword. You decide how often to check. You store the results yourself, or use the API’s built-in history.
Serplify charges $0.005 per successful check, up to 100 results, with every SERP feature included. Failed fetches are free. Reading the rank history back is free.
| Keywords | Weekly checks | Daily checks |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | about $11 a month | $75 a month |
| 1,000 | about $22 | $150 |
| 2,000 | about $43 | $300 |
| 5,000 | about $108 | $750 |
| 10,000 | about $215 | $1,500 |
| 25,000 | about $538 | $3,750 |
Per keyword per month, weekly checking is about 2 cents. Daily checking is 15 cents, which is in the same range as the tools. So the saving comes from choosing the schedule, and from city and device combinations costing exactly one check each rather than a plan upgrade.
The trade is work. You write a short script and keep a table. Our guide on tracking rankings in bulk with a rank tracker API has the whole setup, and it is an afternoon, not a project.
When a tool is the better buy
- Under about 1,000 keywords, one location. An entry plan is $80 to $130 a month and needs no code.
- You want charts, alerts, and client reports today. Tools have them built. An API gives you data.
- You already pay for a suite. If you use Ahrefs or Semrush for research, the tracker inside is a small add-on.
- Nobody on the team writes code. Fair reason. Pick a dedicated tracker like Nightwatch or AccuRanker and skip the suite bundle if you only need tracking.
When the API is the better buy
- Thousands of keywords checked weekly. 10,000 keywords weekly is about $215 a month on the API. The tool plans for 10,000 keywords run $700 to $800 a month.
- Many cities. Local packs change block by block. Checking 50 neighborhoods costs 50 checks, not a plan tier. See how to check local rankings for any city.
- You want the whole page. Tools store your rank. The API returns every block, so you can track People Also Ask, AI Overviews, and competitors from the same fetch.
- Custom reports. Anything a tool’s dashboard does not show, you can build from the raw data.
How to cut your rank tracking bill, whichever you choose
- Track fewer keywords, better. Most sites act on 200 keywords and watch 5,000 out of habit. Move the 5,000 to weekly or monthly.
- Drop desktop where your traffic is mobile. Search Console tells you the split.
- Use country codes for national keywords and city codes only for local ones.
- Check Search Console first. It is free and tells you which queries already bring impressions. Track those.
- Ask for annual pricing. Most tools discount 10 to 20 percent for annual billing. AccuRanker lists 10 percent.
Quick recap
- Tools charge per tracked keyword per month, about 6 to 23 cents in September 2026. Cities and devices multiply the count.
- The API model charges per check, about 2 cents per keyword per month for weekly checks on Serplify.
- Under 1,000 keywords, buy a tool. Over a few thousand, or with many cities, the API costs less and returns more.
- Whatever you pick, track the keywords you act on daily and the rest weekly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest rank tracker?
Per keyword, the cheapest listed plans in September 2026 are around 3 to 6 cents per keyword per month: Nightwatch's Agency plan and SE Ranking's Growth plan. A SERP API is cheaper still for weekly checks, at about 2 cents per keyword per month on Serplify. For under 200 keywords, Google Search Console is free and often enough.
Is there a free rank tracker?
Google Search Console tracks average position for every query your site appeared for, at no cost. Its numbers are averaged and delayed, and it shows no competitors. Most paid trackers offer a free trial of 7 to 14 days. Serplify starts every account with $1 of balance, which is about 200 checks.
Why do rank trackers cost so much for daily updates?
Every check is a real fetch of a Google results page through a proxy, which costs the provider money each time. Daily checks on 5,000 keywords are 150,000 fetches a month. Weekly checks are 21,000. Tools price for daily and pass the cost on.
How much does it cost to track keywords in multiple cities?
On most tools, each keyword in each city counts as a separate tracked keyword. 500 keywords in 10 cities is 5,000 keywords. On a per-check API it is the same math but you can check weekly, so 5,000 checks a week is about $108 a month on Serplify.
Can I build my own rank tracker for less?
Yes, with a SERP API, a small script, and a table to store results. It takes an afternoon to set up. The trade is that you build your own charts. Our guide on tracking rankings in bulk shows the setup.
