How to Find and Track SERP Feature Opportunities for Your Keywords

Find the People Also Ask boxes, local packs, videos, and rich results you can actually win. A step-by-step method for spotting SERP feature opportunities, plus how to track them over time without a big tool budget.

Most SEO work aims at one thing: a higher organic rank. That is fine, but it ignores half the page. The map pack, the question box, the video row, and the rich results around your listing are all places you can appear. Many of them are easier to win than moving from rank six to rank three.

This guide shows how to find those SERP feature opportunities on your keywords and how to track them without a big tool budget.

What counts as an opportunity

A SERP feature is any block on a results page beyond the plain links. Our SERP features guide explains all of them.

An opportunity is a feature that meets three tests:

  1. It appears on a keyword that matters to you.
  2. You could realistically own it. Not every feature is winnable. Forum blocks pull from Reddit. Knowledge panels belong to the entity being searched. AI Overviews can cite you but cannot be owned.
  3. The current owner is beatable, or the spot is empty. A People Also Ask answer from a thin page is an opening. One from a major reference site is a harder fight.

The features that pass these tests most often:

FeatureWhat it takes to winHow common it is
People Also AskA direct answer under a matching heading93% of pages in our September 2026 sample
Local packA complete Google Business Profile in the right area100% of local searches

Step 1: Start with keywords where you already rank

Google fills most features from pages it already ranks for the query. A People Also Ask answer usually comes from a page in the top 20. A featured snippet, where they still exist, nearly always comes from page one.

So your first list is not your wish list. It is every keyword where you sit in positions 1 to 20. Pull that from Search Console (Performance report, filter by position) or from your rank tracker.

If you have no rankings yet, start with how to check your Google rankings and come back.

Step 2: Fetch the real page for each keyword

You need to see the page your audience sees, on their device and in their location. Your own browser is personalized.

For 20 keywords, a private browser window works. Set the location with the method in how to change your Google search location.

For more than that, use a tool. A rank tracker that records SERP features, or a SERP API that returns every block as a typed item, gives you the full page for each keyword in seconds. This is the request we use:

{
  "keyword": "how to reduce bounce rate",
  "location": { "code": 2840 },
  "language": { "code": "en" },
  "device": "mobile",
  "format": "advanced"
}

The response lists every item with a type such as people_also_ask, local_pack, or video, plus its position and the domain it points to.

Step 3: Build the opportunity table

Make a sheet with one row per keyword and these columns:

ColumnWhat goes in it
KeywordThe query
Your rankOrganic position, or blank
Features presentEvery block type on the page
Features you ownBlocks that point to your domain
Winnable featuresBlocks from the table above that you do not own
Current ownerDomain in that block now
NoteWhat you would need to do

Fill it in. With a SERP API and a spreadsheet, the “features present” and “features you own” columns can be filled automatically by matching the domain field.

Step 4: Score and sort

Not every opportunity is worth the same. Score each row from 1 to 5 on three things and add them up:

  • Reach. Does the feature sit above the organic results? People Also Ask often sits in spot 3 or 4. The local pack is usually first. Higher is better.
  • Effort. A People Also Ask answer is a paragraph. A local pack spot is a profile plus reviews. A video is a video.
  • Beatable owner. An empty spot or a weak page scores 5. A major brand scores 1.

Sort by total. The top of the list is your plan for the month.

Step 5: Win the feature

Each feature has its own playbook. The short version:

People Also Ask

Find the exact questions on the page. Add each one as a heading on the page that already ranks, and answer it in two to four plain sentences directly under the heading. Do not bury the answer. Google lifts the first clear answer it finds.

One page can win several questions. Since People Also Ask was on 93 percent of the pages in our sample, this is the most repeatable win in SEO right now.

Local pack

The local pack is driven by your Google Business Profile, not your site. Google’s own help page lists the three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. Pick the right primary category, fill every field, collect reviews and answer them, and post updates. Then check the pack from inside the area you serve, because it changes street by street. See how to check local rankings for any city.

Video

If video shows on the page and none of the top videos are great, make one. Use the query in the title. Put it on YouTube and embed it on the ranking page with video structured data so Google links the two.

Rich results

Rich results come from structured data. Product pages get stars and prices with Product markup. Recipe pages get times and calories. Google’s structured data gallery lists every type and the exact fields. Add the markup, then test it with the Rich Results Test. Rich results only show for pages that already rank, so pair this with pages in the top ten.

AI Overview citation

You cannot own it, but you can be one of its sources. Pages cited in AI Overviews tend to be in the top ten and answer the question directly near the top, with clear headings. There is no special markup. Do the People Also Ask work above and you are doing the AI Overview work too.

Step 6: Track features over time

A feature you won can vanish. A feature that was not there can arrive above you and cut your clicks. Tracking tells you which happened.

What to record, per keyword, on a schedule:

  • Features present
  • Features you own
  • Position of the first organic result
  • Your organic rank

How often: weekly for your top 50 keywords, monthly for the rest, and right after any Google core update.

How to do it cheaply: a rank tracker with feature tracking usually includes this in the plan price. With a SERP API, 500 keywords checked weekly is about 2,000 fetches a month. At Serplify’s $0.005 per page that is $10 a month, and the JSON already has every block typed. Our guide on tracking rankings in bulk shows the setup.

What to look for in the log:

  • New feature above you. Explains a traffic drop with no rank change. Decide whether you can win it.
  • Feature lost. You had a People Also Ask spot and now a competitor does. Refresh the answer.
  • Feature gone from the page entirely. Google changed its mind about the query. Recheck intent with a quick SERP analysis.

A worked example

Take the keyword how to reduce bounce rate. Suppose you rank seventh with a long guide.

The mobile page has an AI Overview, three organic results, a People Also Ask block with four questions, a video row, four more organic results, and related searches.

  • People Also Ask. Two of the four questions have answers from thin pages. Add both questions as headings with direct answers. Effort: an hour. Reach: spot 5 on the page.
  • Video. The video row shows three videos, all older than two years. A fresh eight-minute walkthrough could take a spot. Effort: a day.
  • AI Overview. You are in the top ten, so tighten the opening of the guide to a direct two-sentence answer. Effort: 20 minutes.

Three moves, none of which require outranking the six pages above you. That is the point of feature opportunities.

Quick recap

  • Look beyond organic rank. The blocks around the links are often easier to win.
  • Start with keywords where you already rank in the top 20.
  • Fetch the real page per keyword, build a table of features present and owned, and score by reach, effort, and beatability.
  • People Also Ask, local packs, video, and rich results are the winnable ones. AI Overviews can cite you.
  • Track features per keyword over time so you see arrivals and losses, not just rank changes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a SERP feature opportunity?

It is a SERP feature on a keyword you care about that you could win with a reasonable amount of work. A People Also Ask question you can answer, a local pack you qualify for, a video row where no strong video exists, or a rich result you can turn on with structured data.

How do I know which SERP features I already own?

Fetch the page for each keyword and check the URL inside each feature. Rank trackers that record features usually flag the ones that point to your domain. With a SERP API, filter items by type and compare the domain field to yours.

Can I track SERP features for free?

For a handful of keywords, yes, by checking the page by hand in a private window each week and noting the blocks. For more than that, a SERP API costs a fraction of a cent per page, so 500 keywords checked weekly is about $10 a month on Serplify.

Do SERP features change often?

Yes. Features appear and disappear with Google's updates and with changes in what is on the web. AI Overviews went from rare to common on informational queries in about eighteen months. Check important keywords at least monthly.

Should I chase featured snippets in 2026?

Only where they still exist. In our sample they appeared on under 1 percent of pages, because AI Overviews now cover most of the same queries. People Also Ask is the better target for the same kind of content.
