How to Track AI Overviews: See When Google Shows One and Whether It Cites You

An AI Overview tracker shows when Google puts an AI answer on your keywords and which pages it cites. Free checks, Search Console, tools, and a DIY method.

To track AI Overviews, check three things for each keyword: whether Google shows an AI Overview, which pages it cites, and whether your page is one of them.

An AI Overview is the AI-written answer Google puts at the top of many results pages. It links to the pages it drew from. Those links are the citations you want to track. You can check them by hand, with an AI Overview tracker tool, or with a SERP API that returns the overview as data.

Why AI Overviews need their own tracking

A normal rank tracker records where your page sits in the blue links. An AI Overview is a separate block above them, with its own list of sources, so your rank does not tell you whether you were cited.

We checked this on October 9, 2026, by pulling 56 Google results pages for SEO, marketing, and developer keywords (US, English, desktop). The results:

  • Every page had an AI Overview. It was the very first block on 53 of the 56 pages.
  • Each overview cited 8.3 pages on average, for 464 citations in total.
  • Only 24 percent of cited pages ranked in the organic top 10 for the same search. At the domain level the match was 39 percent.

So a page in position 3 may not be cited, while a page on page two may be. You need to check both.

How often AI Overviews appear by query type

Our niche set was all informational, which is why it hit 100 percent. A mixed set of 30 searches, pulled the same day (US, desktop), shows a wider spread.

Query typePages with an AI Overview
Questions (how to boil an egg)5 of 5
”Best” searches (best crm software)5 of 5
Short topics (keto diet)3 of 5
Buying searches (buy iphone 17)3 of 5
Brand names (amazon)2 of 5
Local (plumber near me)0 of 5

That is 18 of 30 overall. Small samples like this swing a lot, so treat them as a sign, not a rate. Our larger study of Google AI Overviews has the bigger dataset.

What an AI Overview tracker should record

Whatever method you use, keep the same five facts for each keyword and date.

What to recordThe question it answers
PresenceDid Google show an AI Overview for this keyword today?
Your citationIs one of your URLs in the list of sources?
Citation orderIs your link first, or eighth?
Other cited sitesWhich competitors, videos, or forums got cited?
Organic rankWhere do you sit in the normal results below?

Also record the location and the device, because an overview in New York on mobile can differ from one in Texas on desktop. Our guide to SERP features shows how each block changes between devices.

How to check an AI Overview by hand (free)

This works for a handful of keywords.

  1. Open a private or incognito window, so your history does not change the page.
  2. Set the location you care about, because Google uses your IP address to pick results.
  3. Search the keyword. If an AI Overview shows, click Show more to open the full answer.
  4. Look at the source links. On desktop they usually sit in a column beside the text.
  5. Write down the date, whether there was an overview, every cited domain, and your organic rank.

The limits are real. It takes a few minutes per keyword, the overview can change from one search to the next, and you only see your own location.

What Search Console shows, and what it does not

Search Console is Google’s free report on how your site performs in search. It now has two places that cover AI features.

The normal Performance report. Google says clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted under the Web search type. They are mixed in with your regular results, so you cannot pull them apart there.

The Generative AI performance report. Google says it rolled this out to all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. It counts an impression each time a link to your site was shown in an AI Overview or in AI Mode. Google’s help page lists breakdowns by page, country, device, and date.

What it cannot tell you:

  • Which other sites were cited next to you.
  • Keywords where an overview showed and you were not cited.
  • Anything about sites you do not own.

So Search Console tells you that you are being cited. A tracker tells you where you are missing.

AI Overview tracker tools

Many SEO tools now track AI Overviews. They run your keyword list on a schedule and save presence, citations, and competitors over time. When we searched ai overview tracker on October 9, 2026, every organic result on page one was a tool page or a tool’s blog. The AI Overview cited seven tool sites.

Before you pick one, ask four questions:

  1. Can I set the city and the device for each keyword?
  2. How often does it check, and can I rerun a keyword on demand?
  3. Does it wait for overviews that load after the page? Google loads some of them a moment later.
  4. Can I export the full history, including every cited URL?

How to track AI Overviews with a SERP API

A SERP API fetches the Google results page for a keyword and returns every block as data. You send one request per keyword. The AI Overview comes back as one item, with its sources in a references list. This is what most tracker tools do under the hood.

This request asks the Serplify API for the keyword we just mentioned, in US English on desktop:

curl -X POST https://api.serplify.io/v1/serp/search \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer live_your_key_here" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "keyword": "ai overview tracker",
    "location": { "code": 2840 },
    "language": { "code": "en" },
    "device": "desktop",
    "depth": 10
  }'

The response is trimmed below. The cited pages are real. They come from the US desktop page for ai overview tracker we pulled on October 9, 2026.

{
  "status": "ok",
  "data": {
    "keyword": "ai overview tracker",
    "feature_types": ["ai_overview", "organic", "people_also_ask", "related_searches"],
    "items": [
      {
        "type": "ai_overview",
        "rank_absolute": 2,
        "asynchronous_ai_overview": false,
        "references": [
          {
            "type": "ai_overview_reference",
            "source": "AIclicks",
            "domain": "aiclicks.io",
            "url": "https://aiclicks.io/trackers/ai-overviews-tracker",
            "title": "Track Your AI Overview Visibility | 3-day trial"
          },
          {
            "type": "ai_overview_reference",
            "source": "Ahrefs",
            "domain": "ahrefs.com",
            "url": "https://ahrefs.com/ai-overviews-tracker",
            "title": "Free Google AI Overviews Tracker"
          }
        ]
      }
    ]
  }
}

What the fields mean:

  • rank_absolute is where the block sits on the page. Here it is 2, because one organic result sat above the overview.
  • references lists every cited page, with its domain, url, title, and the site name in source.
  • asynchronous_ai_overview is true when Google loaded the overview after the page. The API then knows an overview was there but may not have its sources. Count it as present and recheck later.

To see if you were cited, check the domains. In JavaScript:

const aio = data.items.find((item) => item.type === "ai_overview");
const refs = aio?.references ?? [];
const mine = "example.com";
const cited = refs.some(
  (ref) => ref.domain === mine || ref.domain?.endsWith("." + mine),
);

The dot matters: a plain endsWith("example.com") would also match notexample.com.

Store one row per keyword per day: presence, cited or not, the cited domains, and your organic rank from the same response. Our guide to tracking rankings in bulk shows how to schedule the checks and store the history.

Cost scales with checks. The Serplify SERP API charges $0.005 per successful results page. Checking 500 keywords once a week is about 2,170 checks a month, or roughly $11.

How to read your AI Overview data

Collecting rows is the easy part. Four habits turn them into decisions.

Look at trends, not single checks. One check is only a snapshot, so judge each keyword over several weeks.

Compare citations with rank. If you rank in the top three and are never cited, read the passage on your page that answers the question. Make sure it is short and sits right under a heading. If you are cited but rank below 10, that is visibility a normal rank tracker would miss.

See which kinds of pages win. In our 56 pages, blog guides made up 21 percent of citations and videos 12 percent. Official docs and help pages were 9 percent. If YouTube fills the sources for your keywords, a short video may be a faster way in than another article.

Watch AI Mode too. Google’s chat-style search mode also cites pages, but on its own page, away from the normal results. We compare the two in AI Mode vs AI Overviews.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a keyword has an AI Overview?

Search the keyword in a private window with the right location set and look at the top of the page. If Google wrote an answer with source links, that is an AI Overview. For many keywords, use a tracker tool or a SERP API, which records it for you from a fixed city and device.

Can AI searches be tracked?

Google AI Overviews can be tracked, because they sit on a normal results page that tools can fetch. Search Console also counts your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Answers inside ChatGPT or Perplexity need a different method: you send a fixed set of prompts and record which sources come back.

Is AI Overview the same as ChatGPT?

No. An AI Overview is a short answer Google adds to its own results page, built from pages in Google's index. ChatGPT is a separate chat app from OpenAI. Both write answers with AI and both can cite web pages, but they pick sources in different ways.

How do I turn on Google AI Overview?

You can't switch it on. Google shows an AI Overview only when its systems decide it will help, so some searches get one and others don't. In our October 2026 test, none of five 'near me' searches had one, while all five question searches did.
